Get Grandma Online in 6 Steps

There is a digital divide in America, but it has less to do with economics as it does with age. Although senior citizens have made much headway in recent years, there are still significant segments of the elderly community that refuse to touch a computer, or anything digital at all with a ten foot pole.

The issue was broached beautifully several years ago on a television sitcom of all places. CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond told the story of how Ray’s father Frank loved his old jazz records. He refused to modernize with CD’s, and nobody could seem to convince him of the superiority of sound and features that CD’s offered. In order to bring his father into the twenty-first century, Ray concocted a plan. He bought his father CD versions of the jazz records he already owned, and suddenly turned them on to prove their superior sound quality. As luck would have it, the volume on the CD player was cranked up way too high, proving what Frank had always believed: technology is nothing but trouble. Frank then put on one of his scratchy, static-laden LP’s, and sighed contentedly. Low-tech rules!

Stealing the Internet From Your Neighbor is Easier Than You Think! But DON’T Do It!

I’ve been a computer technician for over 35 years. When Wi-Fi first came out I thought, “This is what I’ve been waiting for… now I can connect to my laptop from anywhere in the house.” I was right! Unfortunately, so could lots of other people!

Actually, I was probably the first one to connect to my wireless router from one of my neighbors. I’d taken my laptop over to his house to help him design an Excel spreadsheet and while I was working, I noticed that my laptop was ‘on-line.’ Even though I was four houses away and across the street, probably 200 feet at least, the signal was rock-solid and I could surf the Net at will.

Keep in Better Touch With a 4G Network Provider

By now, you’ve heard of 4G network coverage as a faster, more convenient way to surf the web at home or around town. The 4G network uses the latest WiMax technology to send signals from your laptop to the Internet, ensuring a clear, constant connection. This coverage expands from your basement to the furthest reaches of your city limit, making the entire city your virtual playground. For a low monthly price, you are privy to the benefits that come with always having online access and you can opt to have network coverage in your home, all over the city, or both.

In addition to changing the way you surf the web, your 4G network provider can also change how you make phone calls. You can add on a voice plan to your 4G wireless coverage and stay better connected online and on the phone. Under this plan, you are able to make unlimited long distance phone calls at a low monthly cost. Keep in better touch with your sister in Minneapolis or use the voice plan for weekly phone check-ups with your son in college. Regardless of where you’re calling or for how long you talk, your 4G wireless technology provider keeps you connected via phone as well.

Use Proxy For Anonymous Browsing

You have probably already come to the situation where you wanted to visit some website but not from your computer. There are many reasons why you want to browse the internet anonymously. The main reason is to hide your IP address. When you visit some website you provide a lot of information about you and your computer to that website. From the IP address it is possible to determine not just your country but also more precise location. Although it is not easy to connect the IP address with particular person, sometimes it is simply not desired to expose your location or properties of your browser.

There is a very simple way to avoid exposing your details to the destination page. You can use a proxy service to bypass your direct connection with any website. This is a service that acts as an intermediate computer which accepts your web addresses and returns requested web pages. So the target website sees the proxy computer and not your computer or your browser. This way you are not accessing the websites directly and your IP address and other data is not exposed to the world but only to one computer. The only disadvantage of browsing this way is that the communication is a little bit slower because of the additional “element” between your computer and web server. This additional element is a computer which downloads pages and sends them to your browser. But this is the only price you will have to pay for anonymity.
