So you’ve just moved into your dream retirement home away from the hustle and bustle of the city, noise, traffic and people. Your dream house is far enough away but still connected to the civilized world. In fact you need to keep in touch with family members, friends, and your investments in order to stay comfortable in your peaceful retirement home. So what are your options? Well the obvious answer would be to get internet but entering into the second decade of the 21st century people have more choices than ever before. You could go the cable internet route and have faster service than a simple dial-up connection, but if you don’t want to have the distractions of cable television, or be limited to receiving service from a company where you already might have poor cable service who’s to say that your internet connection won’t be the same as well. Or maybe you want to go the digital route and get DSL internet. Again DSL has a very fast connection, but like cable it also has its limitations. In particular you might not be able to access a DSL connection to your remote mountain cottage simply because you don’t have the necessary copper wiring in the phone lines. To put it simply you won’t receive reliable service. So what’s the next step?

Well in terms of internet technology, the next step towards improving your connections with family, friends and business partners is satellite internet. Unlike DSL, with a satellite internet connection you can be online and download any important documents anywhere at any time. You won’t have to leave your mountain paradise, because civilization will come to you. Also, the comparison to cable or DSL internet in terms of speed is very similar. You can receive services with a different range of connection speeds, and even the slowest ranges of speeds of connection are still fast. This means no more frustrated moments waiting for your computer to download your grand-daughter’s birthday card. In fact you’ll always have a connection ready to go when you sit down at your computer. You also won’t tie up one of your phone lines with a satellite connection.

One of the best reasons to get satellite internet technology is that once you get you satellite set-up you will always have the option of satellite internet. For example if you move, you can take the dish and modem with you and you won’t ever have to deal with a service technician to set-up your internet. You could also get a portable dish and take it with you on vacation. You could even take the motor home around the country and be able to receive portable satellite service from any mountain, river, canyon, or plain across the great nation.

By making the satellite decision you can e-mail your grandchildren now to let them know how retirement is going, and invite your family to come and visit you when they get the chance.

Verzion’s FiOS service has a cool sounding name, but it is not exactly the most descriptive. With that in mind, I have compiled a brief list of things that many people may not necessarily know about Verizon’s FiOS service.

FiOS is more than just a broadband service. Besides having a name that drips with pure tech-bling, FiOS delivers top-notch digital cable and telephone services to customers lucky enough to be in range. Even more impressive is the fact that they all share the same connection without slowing down one of the fastest and most affordable broadband connections in the nation.

FTTH: FTTH stands for Fiber To The Home, and it describes how Verizon’s FiOS system delivers data. While fiber optics are used all throughout the Internet’s backbone, Verizon is the largest FTTH vendor in the country, and FiOS is their flagship consumer service. Fiber is good, and almost all vendors claim to have fiber, but few actually bring it to the property line.

Fiber is the future. Transmitting data over metal wires is an old concept that has worked well until recently, but comes with inherent limitations. Heat buildups and signal degradation over distance are common problems for engineers and network architects, but neither of these are major problems with a 100% fiber optic network such as Verizon’s FiOS. Fiber can be upgraded again and again at discount prices, which means that once copper wiring reaches its limits, fiber will keep improving and offerings better services.

Verizon’s FiOS is more than a sum of its parts, it is a fusion of them. Verizon’s team of engineers have spent a lot of time and energy examining how people live and where television, broadband, and telephone services fit into the lives of average people. For example: isn’t it annoying when a relative or friend calls right in the middle of a big game or critical moment during a show? With digital telephone and cable services offered via FiOS, caller IDs will appear on-screen along with the option of pausing shows (if one has a DVR) or sending the caller directly to the mailbox to leave a voicemail. Now THAT is convenience that is hard to beat.

There’s an App for that too! FiOS has its own app-center that is referred to as the Widget Bazaar. FiOS apps are almost universally designed to integrate into the television viewing experience in a professionally designed way. These apps add extra value and most are free, though some are free with the option to sign up for additional services. The wealth of apps is impressive, matched only by their quality and visual presentation. Warning: It may be impossible to go back to watching regular digital TV after experiencing app-fueled FiOS digital programming.

Bundle up and save! It may sound counterintuitive at first, but it is possible to get more and pay less by bundling services with many providers, and Verizon FiOS is certainly no exception. Not only does having more than one Verizon FiOS service provide a unique fusion, it also helps customers save money. It is possible to save a lot of money by selecting bundles of digital phone, digital cable, and broadband services, instead of shopping for individual services. Smart customers will take a look at their existing bills and see which bills they could cut by bundling with Verizon FiOS. Chances are that the cumulative effect of bundling could save a good deal of money, especially if measured over months or even years.

Save even more! Why pay full price when it is easy to find a FiOS promotion code that is essentially a coupon for FiOS services. Finding a FiOS promo code is never further than an Internet search away, and the results could be incredible savings on FiOS services. Be sure to not expiration dates on offers and any other limitations.

Verizon FiOS customers can access their DVR from the ‘net. One of the coolest ideas that Verizon FiOS engineers and programmers turned into a reality is the ability to remotely schedule and manage DVRs. Hear about a great show at the water cooler? No problem! Log in and set the DVR at the house to download it automatically without worrying about a complicated installation.

Save money on other stuff too! Verizon FiOS customers have access to the Spend Smart widget that can help them save time and money by turning their cell phones and membership cards to select chains into coupons. Want to save more? Look for a FiOS promo code that either comes with something that is already worth buying or a FiOS promotion code that offers a discount on something worth buying. Such items might include a DVR box, a laptop, or even a game console!

FiOS is a service that is evolving rapidly. It is possible to describe what FiOS is an offers today, but what it may offer tomorrow is anyone’s guess. Speed increases, additional channels, widgets, and new features are added all the time to FiOS. Verizon keeps innovating, but they always keep their ear open for great ideas from customers. Be certain to drop them a line if there is some critical feature or change that would make their service a no-brainer. A company that does not have their ear to the ground in this day and age is likely to get steamrolled, and it is clear that Verizon has learned this lesson well by looking at the shortcomings of the competition.

So there you have it, 10 things that you may not have known about Verizon’s fiber optic FiOS system. Remember, look around for a FiOS promotion code before signing up and save even more by bundling!

Verizon’s FiOS system is unique amongst top tier broadband providers due to its unique use of fiber all the way from Verizon’s connection to the Internet’s backbone to the door of FiOS subscribers. The result is an unprecedented level of broadband performance and frequent upgrades to an already-class-leading network that is bound to make other broadband junkies jealous. Add to this the fact that FiOS serves up digital telephone service and a full-fledged, top-of-the-line digital cable service over the very same connection, and it is easy to see why FiOS is popular in the areas in which it is available.

In fact, if Verizon’s FiOS network were to have any flaws, it would be that they company has yet to expand its network from one coast to the other, which means that the very first step in ordering FiOS might be the last for some consumers: checking availability. It is relatively easy to check the availability of Verizon’s FiOS service via Verizon’s own FIOS website. For those customers lucky enough to be in range of Verizon’s 100% fiber optic network, the big question is what to do next.

Luckily, there is an easy answer to that question: Look for bargains. Verizon offers many different FiOS plans and al la carte options to choose from, but savvy shoppers would be wise to look for coupons that are referred to as Verizon FiOS promotion codes before making any final purchases. It also helps to look at the various FiOS promo codes to find the one that will save one the most money in the long run without sacrificing features. After all, a great deal on a low-tier service is a bargain at no price, so be sure to examine the offerings carefully.

In most cases, bundling is the best way save money and that is often the case when shopping for Verizon FiOS deal with a FiOS promo code as well. FiOS services include top-notch digital cable offerings, advanced digital telephone services, and incredible broadband packages. The only thing that Verizon does not seem to offer, for whatever reason, is the ability to bundle their wireless services with their FiOS services. In some cases, a FiOS promo code may offer a great deal not only on FiOS services but also on the purchase of a 3G-enabled laptop or cellular phones, but most FiOS promotion codes focus on Verizon’s FiOS offerings.

One thing to consider when evaluating the various FiOS offerings is that the various services are not necessarily separate, but are actually capable of interacting in a seamless and convenient way. For example, Verizon FiOS customers that have a TV and telephone plan will find that they can get their caller ID information displayed on their TV set(s). Those with a DVR box will find that pausing a show is an option that can be executed directly from the remote control whenever the phone rings. The entire user experience is so well executed that it is obvious that the fusion of the different components is worth far more than the sum of the individual services. That does not mean that one should pay more than they have to, however, which is why bundling and using a Verizon promotion code is essential to getting the best deal.

Finding the right bundle is usually best accomplished by looking at what Verizon has to offer and see what looks appealing. The bundles change from time to time, but they are generally broken down into three tiers that offer a lot of value. Not all promotional codes can be used for all bundles, so be sure to consider all options available before making any final decisions. It is probably inadvisable to buy a bundle that is too expensive only to use a promotional code, but it is also equally inadvisable to look for a bundle that lacks key features just to use a promo code. Instead, it might be best to wait a few weeks and/or look for additional FiOS promotion codes that are readily available on the Internet.

Once a bundle or plan has been selected, a la carte additions are available as well. If the a la carte options start to get expensive, consider checking the next highest bundle to see if some of the features are included. In some cases, it is possible to buy a higher-tier bundle at a lower price than a lower-tier bundle with certain a la carte options. After making all final selections, all that is left to do is to schedule a visit from a Verizon FiOS work crew to help set up the new FIOS system and give a self-congratulatory pat on the back for shopping smartly and saving money.

A wireless connection for your PC desktop is something everyone dreams of. We all find it very convenient to have one. No more worry about the wired network, or having to check the length of the wire if you plan to move your PC to another place. To be sincere you can set up a wireless network effortlessly and quickly. This article will show you some tips on how to do so.

The first and also fundamental step is to find whether there is wireless internet where your computer is located. If you are lucky to be located near a Wifi Hotspot, for instance a coffee shop, you can utilize this network to get wireless connection for your desktop. If you are a student living in the dorm, you will be able to connect to the wireless network the college has already set up. And if you live in an apartment, there may be a network available and you can use it for free. If you are not in those cases and live in a separate house, you may check to see whether your neighbors have wireless internet, and ask if you can use it.

The second step is to buy a wireless network adapter. There are many types of wireless adapter available on the market, but I recommend you use famous brands like Linksys or Dlink for best connectivity. You should check and compare the price. Stores like Best Buy or Wal-Mart always have good brand names with a reasonable price.

You should choose the wireless adapter according to the distance between your desktop and the wireless hotspot. The most convenient adapters to use are those that can be plugged in the USB port.

Now it is time to set up the connection using the instruction manual which came with the adapter. This is a very easy step. After having set up your adapter, you may check the stability of the network and if everything works fine, you can begin surfing the net.

When there is no available network in your area, you should consider buying a wireless network router to set up wireless connection. You can buy one online or in store, the choice lies in your preference. You should check various stores to get the best price. For online stores, you can go to Amazon.com; they usually have great brand names at cheap price. After you have bought the router, you have to configure it according to the instructions. There may be some points you have to check with your service provider also. If you have lots of PC then this is a great choice.

After reading this article, I hope you will be able to set up wireless network for your PC desktop.

There is a digital divide in America, but it has less to do with economics as it does with age. Although senior citizens have made much headway in recent years, there are still significant segments of the elderly community that refuse to touch a computer, or anything digital at all with a ten foot pole.

The issue was broached beautifully several years ago on a television sitcom of all places. CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond told the story of how Ray’s father Frank loved his old jazz records. He refused to modernize with CD’s, and nobody could seem to convince him of the superiority of sound and features that CD’s offered. In order to bring his father into the twenty-first century, Ray concocted a plan. He bought his father CD versions of the jazz records he already owned, and suddenly turned them on to prove their superior sound quality. As luck would have it, the volume on the CD player was cranked up way too high, proving what Frank had always believed: technology is nothing but trouble. Frank then put on one of his scratchy, static-laden LP’s, and sighed contentedly. Low-tech rules!

The episode enforces the frustration many of us have had with our aging parents and grandparents. There are so many benefits that computers and digital devices would bring to our loved ones, if only they could get over their fear or technology. The biggest hurdle is, of course, the internet. How can you convince grandma to get online? This is no small challenge for many people. Fortunately, there is a way. It will take some legwork and patience on your end, but with a little gentle persuasion (and without condescension!), grandma will be bloggin’ it up in no time. Or at least emailing.

1) Set-up. You need to either get her a computer with internet service or set up a place for her to get online. If you are going to help her at her home, make sure she has a high-speed connection. How fast? Consider that she likely won’t be doing any heavy online gaming, but she will want to video conference. A 1.5 Mbps connection would be sufficient. Just make sure she isn’t using dial-up, which is just way too slow for today’s complex websites. Remember, we want this to be a comfortable experience for her. If she lives in any type of Assisted Living facility, chances are, she will have some place to get online already, or at least wi-fi service to get online with her own laptop.

2) Create her online accounts in advance. You see, it might sound easy for you to tell her to “go to Facebook and make your own profile,” but that is complicated stuff if you haven’t done it before. You can start by getting her a web-based email account from Yahoo, MSN, or Gmail. If you can, try to choose usernames and passwords that will work on several sites so she doesn’t have to remember 10 different ones. Make sure the email site is set to “Remember my Password,” and write her username and password on a sheet of paper in case she has trouble signing in later on. Once her email is set up, you can proceed to social networking sites like Facebook, or something more senior focused like Eons.com or Senioricity.com. But photo sites will be even more important. Get her signed up with a site like Photobucket, Snapfish, or Flickr. Make sure it will be compatible with the sites that you or other family members use so that it will be easy for her to share pictures of the grandkids.

3) Get her set up for Video Conferencing. This might sound harder than it is. If her computer is not set up with a built-in camera, go to Wal-Mart and buy a Skype-compatible USB 2.0 camera with built-in microphone. They can retail between $15 and $50, depending on quality. Installation should be a snap for any computer made in the past couple of years. When you get it installed, go to Skype.com and get her signed up for a Skype account. Same rules apply here: choose the same username, and ask Skype to “remember” her information. Once you are into her new account, add family members’ usernames and passwords to her contact list.

4) Make everything simple! You can do this without being condescending. Every person is different. Some seniors might resent it if you create a couple of simple icons on their desktop labeled “Internet,” “E-mail,” and “Grand-Babies.” But more likely, they will appreciate the effort to make everything just a click away. This kind of thing doesn’t take much time at all, and a clutter-free computing experience is a low-stress experience.

5) Coordinate with other family members, especially the ones who live out of town. Before she ever gets online, have them share their photo albums online, and even send her an email welcoming her to the twenty-first century, complete with a photo attachment. But best of all would be to make sure they are ready and willing to video conference with her right off the bat. Nothing will bring tears to her eyes quicker than seeing the grandkids wave to her with a few easy clicks of the mouse. It will go a long way in making her online experience comfortable and exciting right off the bat.

6) The reveal. All of the previous steps are preparation. She doesn’t have to be there when you do them. In fact, it would be better if she wasn’t, because she might get nervous seeing you enter so much information at different sites. So once you have completed steps 1-5, bring her to the computer, and let her see, step by step, all of the cool things she can do online. Even now, be sure not to over-do it. She probably won’t be ready for Netflix streaming movies. That’s okay. Take it one step at a time. She’ll get there eventually!

Remember that for The Greatest Generation, technology and gadgets are secondary to relationships. It ought to be that way for every generation, shouldn’t it? For this reason, it is best to focus on those online advancements that bring people closer together, especially the grandkids. If you can prove to her that a little bit of know-how can improve long-distance relationships with people she loves, it might be all she needs.

A year in the making the service was launched today. The creator stated he felt it was time for internet radio to have their own news medium rather than carry one of the few mainstream news services. “It was my goal to have a news service that was specific and unique to internet radio stations” he said.

The service is being offered in two flavors, free and paid. The news service will primarily focus on U.S. national news. It offers 3 two minute segments per day Monday through Friday. The segments are fully produced by the services staff. In addition the website carries the full news stories used in the segments on their website, which are also written in house by the staff.

Internet radio as well as other internet related media have grown in use tremendously over the last few years. It’s not surprising that services such as this are appearing on the scene. Could this service rival such larger companies as ABC, NBC or Fox, I honestly don’t think so. But it could prove to be a welcome and interesting alternative for the internet radio listener. News podcasters have had great success because they offer subjects and commentary mainstream news overlooks.

Time will tell if a internet radio news service can gather a following of interested persons. It seems probable given the amount of time people around the world spend on the internet, as well as listening to online music stations that would broadcast this news. My personal opinion is that not only could this endeavor succeed, it could become a well established online news source. The biggest factor involved from my point of view will be if internet stations actually broadcast the services news.

I’ve been a computer technician for over 35 years. When Wi-Fi first came out I thought, “This is what I’ve been waiting for… now I can connect to my laptop from anywhere in the house.” I was right! Unfortunately, so could lots of other people!

Actually, I was probably the first one to connect to my wireless router from one of my neighbors. I’d taken my laptop over to his house to help him design an Excel spreadsheet and while I was working, I noticed that my laptop was ‘on-line.’ Even though I was four houses away and across the street, probably 200 feet at least, the signal was rock-solid and I could surf the Net at will.

Since my laptop and desktop computers share a home network, I was also able to connect to my desktop’s printer. As we worked, I sent the spreadsheet designs to the printer at home just like I was setting at my desk working on them.

We worked for a few hours and then took a coffee break. I was curious to see if there were any other wireless networks in range and sure enough, there were two. One was encrypted, but the other was wide open. Just for laughs, I decided to see if I could log onto it. I clicked on the SSID and in a few seconds, I was online and using someone else’s Internet connection. Whose was it? Who knows? But they were nearby because Wi-Fi signals have a maximum range of about 300 feet.

That was almost 10 years ago. Today, with the help of inexpensive (under $10 in some cases) antennas, you can pick up these signals up to a mile away. This has made it easy for people to go together and share Internet connections. The ISP is the loser in this scenario. It’s kind of like people sharing a cable television connection. Every once in a while the cable company will run an add saying, “Stealing cable TV is illegal.” It’s not all that hard to detect cable theft. There’s a voltage drop when cable lines are split and shared.

But with Wi-Fi, sharing is nearly impossible to detect. And with today’s 5 and 10 megabyte Internet speeds, several people can share a Wi-Fi connection with little degradation, saving a lot of money in the process. Of course, sharing an Internet connection between neighbors is as illegal as sharing a cable television connection.

Known wireless sharing is only part of a service provider’s problem. A much bigger problem is people logging onto someone’s router without them knowing it. This happens all the time. I’ve seen it dozens of times as a tech when working on someone’s computer. And because the person who’s paying for the connection doesn’t usually notice any thing different, it can go undetected for years.

The way to protect yourself is simple. Turn on your router’s encryption. It’s easy and you can do it in a minute or two. You’re inviting problems when you leave your router open to anyone who can log onto it. That’s because you never know what they are downloading. Plus, with a simple homebuilt antenna such as the Wi-Fi CANnon, your router’s range isn’t just 300 feet anymore. Your uninvited neighbor might be up to a mile or more away! The bottom line is…don’t risk it, turn on your router’s encryption!

For the record, there are ‘FREE’ Internet connections that people can log onto legally. Forget your neighbor; there are universities, public libraries, public parks and recreation facilities, government sponsored hotspots, restaurant hotspots, RV hotspots, and a wealth of other FREE access points scattered across almost every city in the US. This is how to get FREE Internet the legal way. You just need a high-gain, directional antenna to find them.

By now, you’ve heard of 4G network coverage as a faster, more convenient way to surf the web at home or around town. The 4G network uses the latest WiMax technology to send signals from your laptop to the Internet, ensuring a clear, constant connection. This coverage expands from your basement to the furthest reaches of your city limit, making the entire city your virtual playground. For a low monthly price, you are privy to the benefits that come with always having online access and you can opt to have network coverage in your home, all over the city, or both.

In addition to changing the way you surf the web, your 4G network provider can also change how you make phone calls. You can add on a voice plan to your 4G wireless coverage and stay better connected online and on the phone. Under this plan, you are able to make unlimited long distance phone calls at a low monthly cost. Keep in better touch with your sister in Minneapolis or use the voice plan for weekly phone check-ups with your son in college. Regardless of where you’re calling or for how long you talk, your 4G wireless technology provider keeps you connected via phone as well.

Your voice plan not only keeps you better connected to loved ones who are at a long distance but also helps you monitor your phone calls better. With a voice plan and 4G network coverage, you can actually forward all of your voicemails to your e-mail account. The voicemails come in Wav attachments and enable you to listen to voicemails from calls that you may have missed from your home while you’re at the supermarket, the gym, or at work. This feature from your 4G wireless technology provider enables you to get your messages and return calls faster.

Finally, with your 4G wireless provider, you can better control who can get a hold of you on your phone and when. The phone plan allows you to actually forward calls from your home phone to your mobile or vice versa. Additionally, it enables you to block calls from specific persons or companies. This means you may never have to hear from another telemarketer again. These features from your 4G wireless technology provider enable you to control how and whom you communicate with.

With a voice plan from your 4G provider, you can stay in better touch with loved ones and clients for a low monthly cost. The plan works in conjunction with your 4G coverage, which allows you to stay better connected through unlimited long distance calling. In addition to checking your bank account and paying your bills with your 4G coverage, you can also receive and listen to your voicemails. Furthermore, this plan puts you in control of how you communicate by allowing you to forward and block calls. These services forever change the way you communicate by enabling you to have an affordable, easy way to stay online and on the phone.
