So you’ve just moved into your dream retirement home away from the hustle and bustle of the city, noise, traffic and people. Your dream house is far enough away but still connected to the civilized world. In fact you need to keep in touch with family members, friends, and your investments in order to stay comfortable in your peaceful retirement home. So what are your options? Well the obvious answer would be to get internet but entering into the second decade of the 21st century people have more choices than ever before. You could go the cable internet route and have faster service than a simple dial-up connection, but if you don’t want to have the distractions of cable television, or be limited to receiving service from a company where you already might have poor cable service who’s to say that your internet connection won’t be the same as well. Or maybe you want to go the digital route and get DSL internet. Again DSL has a very fast connection, but like cable it also has its limitations. In particular you might not be able to access a DSL connection to your remote mountain cottage simply because you don’t have the necessary copper wiring in the phone lines. To put it simply you won’t receive reliable service. So what’s the next step?

Well in terms of internet technology, the next step towards improving your connections with family, friends and business partners is satellite internet. Unlike DSL, with a satellite internet connection you can be online and download any important documents anywhere at any time. You won’t have to leave your mountain paradise, because civilization will come to you. Also, the comparison to cable or DSL internet in terms of speed is very similar. You can receive services with a different range of connection speeds, and even the slowest ranges of speeds of connection are still fast. This means no more frustrated moments waiting for your computer to download your grand-daughter’s birthday card. In fact you’ll always have a connection ready to go when you sit down at your computer. You also won’t tie up one of your phone lines with a satellite connection.

One of the best reasons to get satellite internet technology is that once you get you satellite set-up you will always have the option of satellite internet. For example if you move, you can take the dish and modem with you and you won’t ever have to deal with a service technician to set-up your internet. You could also get a portable dish and take it with you on vacation. You could even take the motor home around the country and be able to receive portable satellite service from any mountain, river, canyon, or plain across the great nation.

By making the satellite decision you can e-mail your grandchildren now to let them know how retirement is going, and invite your family to come and visit you when they get the chance.

Verzion’s FiOS service has a cool sounding name, but it is not exactly the most descriptive. With that in mind, I have compiled a brief list of things that many people may not necessarily know about Verizon’s FiOS service.

FiOS is more than just a broadband service. Besides having a name that drips with pure tech-bling, FiOS delivers top-notch digital cable and telephone services to customers lucky enough to be in range. Even more impressive is the fact that they all share the same connection without slowing down one of the fastest and most affordable broadband connections in the nation.

FTTH: FTTH stands for Fiber To The Home, and it describes how Verizon’s FiOS system delivers data. While fiber optics are used all throughout the Internet’s backbone, Verizon is the largest FTTH vendor in the country, and FiOS is their flagship consumer service. Fiber is good, and almost all vendors claim to have fiber, but few actually bring it to the property line.

Fiber is the future. Transmitting data over metal wires is an old concept that has worked well until recently, but comes with inherent limitations. Heat buildups and signal degradation over distance are common problems for engineers and network architects, but neither of these are major problems with a 100% fiber optic network such as Verizon’s FiOS. Fiber can be upgraded again and again at discount prices, which means that once copper wiring reaches its limits, fiber will keep improving and offerings better services.

Verizon’s FiOS is more than a sum of its parts, it is a fusion of them. Verizon’s team of engineers have spent a lot of time and energy examining how people live and where television, broadband, and telephone services fit into the lives of average people. For example: isn’t it annoying when a relative or friend calls right in the middle of a big game or critical moment during a show? With digital telephone and cable services offered via FiOS, caller IDs will appear on-screen along with the option of pausing shows (if one has a DVR) or sending the caller directly to the mailbox to leave a voicemail. Now THAT is convenience that is hard to beat.

There’s an App for that too! FiOS has its own app-center that is referred to as the Widget Bazaar. FiOS apps are almost universally designed to integrate into the television viewing experience in a professionally designed way. These apps add extra value and most are free, though some are free with the option to sign up for additional services. The wealth of apps is impressive, matched only by their quality and visual presentation. Warning: It may be impossible to go back to watching regular digital TV after experiencing app-fueled FiOS digital programming.

Bundle up and save! It may sound counterintuitive at first, but it is possible to get more and pay less by bundling services with many providers, and Verizon FiOS is certainly no exception. Not only does having more than one Verizon FiOS service provide a unique fusion, it also helps customers save money. It is possible to save a lot of money by selecting bundles of digital phone, digital cable, and broadband services, instead of shopping for individual services. Smart customers will take a look at their existing bills and see which bills they could cut by bundling with Verizon FiOS. Chances are that the cumulative effect of bundling could save a good deal of money, especially if measured over months or even years.

Save even more! Why pay full price when it is easy to find a FiOS promotion code that is essentially a coupon for FiOS services. Finding a FiOS promo code is never further than an Internet search away, and the results could be incredible savings on FiOS services. Be sure to not expiration dates on offers and any other limitations.

Verizon FiOS customers can access their DVR from the ‘net. One of the coolest ideas that Verizon FiOS engineers and programmers turned into a reality is the ability to remotely schedule and manage DVRs. Hear about a great show at the water cooler? No problem! Log in and set the DVR at the house to download it automatically without worrying about a complicated installation.

Save money on other stuff too! Verizon FiOS customers have access to the Spend Smart widget that can help them save time and money by turning their cell phones and membership cards to select chains into coupons. Want to save more? Look for a FiOS promo code that either comes with something that is already worth buying or a FiOS promotion code that offers a discount on something worth buying. Such items might include a DVR box, a laptop, or even a game console!

FiOS is a service that is evolving rapidly. It is possible to describe what FiOS is an offers today, but what it may offer tomorrow is anyone’s guess. Speed increases, additional channels, widgets, and new features are added all the time to FiOS. Verizon keeps innovating, but they always keep their ear open for great ideas from customers. Be certain to drop them a line if there is some critical feature or change that would make their service a no-brainer. A company that does not have their ear to the ground in this day and age is likely to get steamrolled, and it is clear that Verizon has learned this lesson well by looking at the shortcomings of the competition.

So there you have it, 10 things that you may not have known about Verizon’s fiber optic FiOS system. Remember, look around for a FiOS promotion code before signing up and save even more by bundling!

Super-fast broadband deals which can achieve speeds of up to 40Mb/s are likely to lead to increased competition and, thus, lower prices for consumers.

The BT Infinity service which uses fibre-to-the-cabinet technology and is part of BT Openreach’s £1.5 billion investment in its broadband infrastructure, for example, has lower prices than many of the UK’s other so-called ’super-fast’ broadband deals.

By the end of the month 500,000 properties will be connected to Infinity in the UK with up to 4 million online by the end of the year.

A spokesman from rival super-fast broadband provider Virgin Media stated that “We’re not sure why people in the UK would want…BT’s 40Mb service… when they can already get Virgin Media’s great value 50Mb service.”

BT has two new Infinity options both of which offer ‘up to 40Mbps’ connection.

BT Infinity Option 1 costs £19.99 a month, a fairly reasonable price, but comes with a 20GB monthly download limit, which some say may hinder the full potential of 40Mbps broadband deals.

Option 2 in contrast comes with an unlimited monthly download limit, meaning users can surf and download to their hearts content for £24.99 a month, as long as you stay within the acceptable usage policy. That means you, p2p users!

The 50Mb/s Virgin Media XXL Broadband service is currently available to 12.5 million homes across the UK but costs £38 per month if taken as a standalone product. The 50Mbps package is currently provided with a fully unlimited usage allowance.

Virgin Media has sought to draw attention to the contrast between its approach to download limits on super-fast broadband services and BT’s approach, singling out the 20GB limit on BT Infinity Option 1 for particular criticism by stating that customers will only be able to download around 4 HD movies a month before hitting the limit.

Hitting back at these suggestions a BT spokesman claimed that some customers would simply want to upgrade the speed of their broadband ’seamlessly’ to quicken their current surfing habits.

However it is hard to predict how access to faster broadband may affect browsing habits, potentially causing customers to consume much more bandwidth than before.

One particular standout feature of the new BT Infinity products is the 10Mbps upload speed which will vastly improve the experience of sending large amount of data, changing the user experience on data-heavy sites like Flickr.

Despite all the fanfare many broadband users remain sceptical about the real-world performance of the super-fast broadband range of products.

The main concerns are that the next-generation of broadband services will still be affected by the same old problems of traffic management and bad advertising.

After one anonymous user in a trial for the new BT service reportedly only managed an 11Mbps connection, many have argued that the phrase ‘up to’ should be banished from broadband advertising.

The new BT Infinity packages manage to increase speeds by utilising fibre optic cables as far as the green street cabinets and then running the final leg to the home on traditional copper wires. By 2012 BT also plans to have some properties connected via fibre to the home with 100Mbps potential.

There is a digital divide in America, but it has less to do with economics as it does with age. Although senior citizens have made much headway in recent years, there are still significant segments of the elderly community that refuse to touch a computer, or anything digital at all with a ten foot pole.

The issue was broached beautifully several years ago on a television sitcom of all places. CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond told the story of how Ray’s father Frank loved his old jazz records. He refused to modernize with CD’s, and nobody could seem to convince him of the superiority of sound and features that CD’s offered. In order to bring his father into the twenty-first century, Ray concocted a plan. He bought his father CD versions of the jazz records he already owned, and suddenly turned them on to prove their superior sound quality. As luck would have it, the volume on the CD player was cranked up way too high, proving what Frank had always believed: technology is nothing but trouble. Frank then put on one of his scratchy, static-laden LP’s, and sighed contentedly. Low-tech rules!

The episode enforces the frustration many of us have had with our aging parents and grandparents. There are so many benefits that computers and digital devices would bring to our loved ones, if only they could get over their fear or technology. The biggest hurdle is, of course, the internet. How can you convince grandma to get online? This is no small challenge for many people. Fortunately, there is a way. It will take some legwork and patience on your end, but with a little gentle persuasion (and without condescension!), grandma will be bloggin’ it up in no time. Or at least emailing.

1) Set-up. You need to either get her a computer with internet service or set up a place for her to get online. If you are going to help her at her home, make sure she has a high-speed connection. How fast? Consider that she likely won’t be doing any heavy online gaming, but she will want to video conference. A 1.5 Mbps connection would be sufficient. Just make sure she isn’t using dial-up, which is just way too slow for today’s complex websites. Remember, we want this to be a comfortable experience for her. If she lives in any type of Assisted Living facility, chances are, she will have some place to get online already, or at least wi-fi service to get online with her own laptop.

2) Create her online accounts in advance. You see, it might sound easy for you to tell her to “go to Facebook and make your own profile,” but that is complicated stuff if you haven’t done it before. You can start by getting her a web-based email account from Yahoo, MSN, or Gmail. If you can, try to choose usernames and passwords that will work on several sites so she doesn’t have to remember 10 different ones. Make sure the email site is set to “Remember my Password,” and write her username and password on a sheet of paper in case she has trouble signing in later on. Once her email is set up, you can proceed to social networking sites like Facebook, or something more senior focused like Eons.com or Senioricity.com. But photo sites will be even more important. Get her signed up with a site like Photobucket, Snapfish, or Flickr. Make sure it will be compatible with the sites that you or other family members use so that it will be easy for her to share pictures of the grandkids.

3) Get her set up for Video Conferencing. This might sound harder than it is. If her computer is not set up with a built-in camera, go to Wal-Mart and buy a Skype-compatible USB 2.0 camera with built-in microphone. They can retail between $15 and $50, depending on quality. Installation should be a snap for any computer made in the past couple of years. When you get it installed, go to Skype.com and get her signed up for a Skype account. Same rules apply here: choose the same username, and ask Skype to “remember” her information. Once you are into her new account, add family members’ usernames and passwords to her contact list.

4) Make everything simple! You can do this without being condescending. Every person is different. Some seniors might resent it if you create a couple of simple icons on their desktop labeled “Internet,” “E-mail,” and “Grand-Babies.” But more likely, they will appreciate the effort to make everything just a click away. This kind of thing doesn’t take much time at all, and a clutter-free computing experience is a low-stress experience.

5) Coordinate with other family members, especially the ones who live out of town. Before she ever gets online, have them share their photo albums online, and even send her an email welcoming her to the twenty-first century, complete with a photo attachment. But best of all would be to make sure they are ready and willing to video conference with her right off the bat. Nothing will bring tears to her eyes quicker than seeing the grandkids wave to her with a few easy clicks of the mouse. It will go a long way in making her online experience comfortable and exciting right off the bat.

6) The reveal. All of the previous steps are preparation. She doesn’t have to be there when you do them. In fact, it would be better if she wasn’t, because she might get nervous seeing you enter so much information at different sites. So once you have completed steps 1-5, bring her to the computer, and let her see, step by step, all of the cool things she can do online. Even now, be sure not to over-do it. She probably won’t be ready for Netflix streaming movies. That’s okay. Take it one step at a time. She’ll get there eventually!

Remember that for The Greatest Generation, technology and gadgets are secondary to relationships. It ought to be that way for every generation, shouldn’t it? For this reason, it is best to focus on those online advancements that bring people closer together, especially the grandkids. If you can prove to her that a little bit of know-how can improve long-distance relationships with people she loves, it might be all she needs.

I’ve been a computer technician for over 35 years. When Wi-Fi first came out I thought, “This is what I’ve been waiting for… now I can connect to my laptop from anywhere in the house.” I was right! Unfortunately, so could lots of other people!

Actually, I was probably the first one to connect to my wireless router from one of my neighbors. I’d taken my laptop over to his house to help him design an Excel spreadsheet and while I was working, I noticed that my laptop was ‘on-line.’ Even though I was four houses away and across the street, probably 200 feet at least, the signal was rock-solid and I could surf the Net at will.

Since my laptop and desktop computers share a home network, I was also able to connect to my desktop’s printer. As we worked, I sent the spreadsheet designs to the printer at home just like I was setting at my desk working on them.

We worked for a few hours and then took a coffee break. I was curious to see if there were any other wireless networks in range and sure enough, there were two. One was encrypted, but the other was wide open. Just for laughs, I decided to see if I could log onto it. I clicked on the SSID and in a few seconds, I was online and using someone else’s Internet connection. Whose was it? Who knows? But they were nearby because Wi-Fi signals have a maximum range of about 300 feet.

That was almost 10 years ago. Today, with the help of inexpensive (under $10 in some cases) antennas, you can pick up these signals up to a mile away. This has made it easy for people to go together and share Internet connections. The ISP is the loser in this scenario. It’s kind of like people sharing a cable television connection. Every once in a while the cable company will run an add saying, “Stealing cable TV is illegal.” It’s not all that hard to detect cable theft. There’s a voltage drop when cable lines are split and shared.

But with Wi-Fi, sharing is nearly impossible to detect. And with today’s 5 and 10 megabyte Internet speeds, several people can share a Wi-Fi connection with little degradation, saving a lot of money in the process. Of course, sharing an Internet connection between neighbors is as illegal as sharing a cable television connection.

Known wireless sharing is only part of a service provider’s problem. A much bigger problem is people logging onto someone’s router without them knowing it. This happens all the time. I’ve seen it dozens of times as a tech when working on someone’s computer. And because the person who’s paying for the connection doesn’t usually notice any thing different, it can go undetected for years.

The way to protect yourself is simple. Turn on your router’s encryption. It’s easy and you can do it in a minute or two. You’re inviting problems when you leave your router open to anyone who can log onto it. That’s because you never know what they are downloading. Plus, with a simple homebuilt antenna such as the Wi-Fi CANnon, your router’s range isn’t just 300 feet anymore. Your uninvited neighbor might be up to a mile or more away! The bottom line is…don’t risk it, turn on your router’s encryption!

For the record, there are ‘FREE’ Internet connections that people can log onto legally. Forget your neighbor; there are universities, public libraries, public parks and recreation facilities, government sponsored hotspots, restaurant hotspots, RV hotspots, and a wealth of other FREE access points scattered across almost every city in the US. This is how to get FREE Internet the legal way. You just need a high-gain, directional antenna to find them.

The imminent broadband speed of 50Mbps promised by Virgin Media is music to the ears of any serious web user or those who would like an extra-fast broadband connection to watch TV programmes and films online – especially if it is being streamed.

The rumour mill, though, has it that Virgin Media’s upload speed (the speed at which you can send things to the web) will be just 1.5Mbps.

This is being seen as a real let-down considering the generous amount of bandwidth on hand for downloading.

This initial feedback will hopefully prompt Virgin Media to have second thoughts about their considerably slower upload speeds – they won’t want to have any Doubting Thomases about when they launch their new product.

Will traffic be ‘managed’?

More worrying perhaps are reports that Virgin Media plans to apply traffic management to the proposed high-speed broadband connections.

A Virgin Media representative refuted this and pointed out that the company has not yet determined whether they will apply traffic management, and if they do, at what level it will be applied.

Virgin Media stirred up a bit of a storm among its broadband customers when it revised its traffic management policy a few months ago.

Users, exceeding what was generally regarded as a rather paltry peak download allowance, had their connection speeds slashed by as much as 50%, sometimes for as long as five hours.

Users are hoping for a policy change when this product finally comes on stream later this year. There seems little point in such a fast broadband connection if users can’t use it for the things that make fast broadband worth having (streaming media, large downloads etc)?

How will it affect the UK broadband landscape?

The question on many people’s lips now is whether Virgin Media is about to capture the whole of the UK broadband market with a broadband package twice the speed of its closest rival, and well over five times the speed of most broadband packages.

It will certainly be very appealing to Virgin Media’s current 20Mbps package users.

More tempting still is the fact that Virgin Media’s fibre-optic cable network will evidently be able to deliver the advertised speed all the time, unlike broadband via copper wires which suffers from disparate speeds that often bear little resemblance to their advertised speeds.

Reports that Virgin Media broadband is on the verge of rolling out their newest product countrywide will be a wake-up call for BT broadband, whose fastest broadband offering is only half the speed at 24Mbps at most.

What’s more, the BT project is way behind schedule.

But if Virgin Media is going to keep its customers satisfied, they will have to bust a gut to ensure that their broadband service is a cut above that of their competitors by maintaining those promised ultra high speeds.

A survey has revealed that BT Broadband is the largest ISP in UK with approximately 4,600,00 subscribers. Earlier, it carried a brand-name of BT Yahoo! Broadband and BT Openworld. It is the product of a very successful group called BT Group plc. BT Broadband offers many broadband services at extremely reasonable and attractive prices. It provides broadband as cabled connection, through wi-fi networks and the latest mobile broadband services. Its carefully designed home and business packages fulfill requirements of different users having varied expectations from their connections. Cost of these packages fluctuates according to the prices offered by other service providers.

Broadband connection has three basic elements that define its efficacy and performance. These are availability of the service provider, speed of the connection and the download limit. Availability refers to the provider’s influence and network coverage in an area. BT Broadband has widespread network and latest infrastructure covering majority of UK. Its strength and influence in remote areas is acknowledged by all. Better availability ensures improved broadband services and cheap prices. Speed of any connection is a combination of many factors. Wiring, type of package and network coverage are few important elements that influences the speed. BT Broadband delivers excellent speeds for all their connections. It also maintains minimum difference between the actual speed and the maximum speed for any connection. Many service providers creates false impression regarding their connections by advertising only maximum speeds. While their actual speeds are significantly lower than that. BT Broadband offers various download limits with their packages. Unlimited download deals are also available with their connections. The name assigned to these packages is misleading as they are not truly unlimited. There is a fixed limit covered under the fair usage policy associated with them. BT packages are extremely transparent about such policies and abreast consumers with every necessary information. Service providers tend to charge users for exceeding their download limits without any warnings. This hidden cost is playing a huge role in UK broadband market. Service providers capitalize on the negligence and poor knowledge of users. Broadband bills also carry paper cost and non direct debit payment as additional cost which are actually hidden charges. These costs are mentioned in fine black print at the end of contract.

Information regarding latest broadband packages offered by BT Broadband is available online. The websites designed for these purposes gives comparison and helps user formulate a correct decision. Packages from BT are easily compared with other deals on these sites. Voucher codes provide additional advantages for broadband connections bought online. Voucher codes for broadband connections from BT are easily available from many websites. BT Broadband has achieved excellence in technology through innovation and infrastructure. Extraordinary performance from BT is expected in future for their expanding network and growing professionalism. It has proved itself in all three aspects of broadband ie. speed, availability and download limit. BT has many competitors in UK that constantly forces it to provide better quality and attractive packages. Best way to know BT is by experiencing its performance.

We have fast cars, fast marriages, fast foods, and now fast communication, and the world is getting smaller everyday. Superfast 24MB broadband is making its entry into the world of communication. Low cost phone calls from Least Cost Telecom through business broadband have undergone total change from ordinary phone line into a high speed information line. It is the fastest connection that can get you to your business associates and makes business deals smooth and easy.

Business broadband has a high rate of data conveyance. With such high speed, it can enhance sales and productivity. And what is more it is that it doesn’t need a big capital outlay. You can connect with flat rate monthly charges. Least Cost Telecom offers a choice of 1.3MB or 2.5MB upload speeds. There are added value services such as unlimited downloads over and above a fixed IP address with every connection. This comes in a packaged deal for a 3-month minimum term and you can be notified in four days time.

The low cost phone calls via broadband of Least Cost Telecom come in just the most opportune time. There are many advantages when businesses whether small or large avail of the business broadband for low cost phone calls from Least Cost Telecom. With 24MB broadband from Least Cost Telecom, you have a choice of 2 levels of upload and download speeds such as 24MAX at 1.3MB or 24MAXPLUS at 2.5MB. The contention ratio is 20 to 1 which is better than normal of 50:1 or 100:1. Wherever you are or whatever distances, you are covered. Through ADSL2 you are assured of good quality connection environmental factors notwithstanding.

As always Least Cost Telecom has on standby customer service support for any concerns you may have, technical issues and hardware requirements. Business broadband to be viable must be in an area where there is a BT phone line and the exchange is enabled. There is actually no worries with this since more are added every week. And to switch to 24MB broadband you need to sign a service agreement with Least Cost Telecom which includes a debit mandate authorisation. Then you are done!

Broadband has done a lot of wonders to otherwise exorbitant telephone expenditures. It has speeded up data transmission but has maintained the superior norms of quality and dependability. The latest technology helps in cutting cost of outbound calls even without changing your existing telephone numbers and performance is almost always enhanced. Your communication is permanently connected and its dual duties of making voice calls at the same time as receiving files and information in the shortest possible time.

Least Cost Telecom emphasises that business broadband is perfect for small, medium, and large businesses. This is a new and exciting chance particularly for organisations with multiple locations. Call charges are the minimum. Low cost phones calls are made possible through transparent pricing structures without hidden charges or confusing fine print contract terms. The rates have never been this reasonable as ever. There is a plan for every requirement whether your preference is landline or mobile phone.

Least Cost Telecom has been in the business for quite some time that its experience and reputation is unquestionable. Customer service and support are second to none. The speed that it makes to serve you equals the speed that broadband can do. Communication is fast and never confusing. It makes things easy and life simple and uncomplicated for end users.
